Short Film by Fulbright Alumna Ioana Mischie

Cumulonimbus, a short independent film written and directed by Fulbright alumna Ioana Mischie, was selected by filmmaker Gus Van Sant, out of 1000 global submissions, as one of the five honorary finalists on the Coppola Shorts platform (http://coppolashorts.com/). Congratulations, Ioana!

“Cumulonimbus is a hybrid film that explores the boundaries of cinematic storytelling and enters the ground of visual anthropology, as it traces the roots of an old tradition of the Roma communities, who are marrying (promising) their children as early as possible. How can we measure the ethics of a tradition? And how can we decode meaning through child-games?”

Dr. Lightfoot, Senior Fulbright Grantee, Meets with Romanian High School Students

On January 29, the Fulbright Educational Advising Center-EducationUSA had the pleasure of hosting a presentation delivered by dr. Elizabeth Lightfoot, University of Minnesota professor and 2018-2019 U.S. senior grantee, on the strengths of the U.S. higher education system and the various pathways to admission to undergraduate study. Dr. Lightfoot talked to an audience of 9th and 11th grade high school students from I. L. Caragiale National College about some of the specific benefits of studying in an American university or college, from the possibility of doing research using creative methodologies and high-tech labs to networking with peers from many different countries.
Dr. Lightfoot kindly answered questions on the differences between the U. S. educational process and practices and expectations about college-level instruction in other countries, including Romania. The high school students in the audience seemed particularly involved in the discussions and did not shy away from asking questions about post-graduation prospects.

Angela Merkel Awarded Fulbright Prize for International Understanding

On January 28, 2019, the J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding was awarded to Dr. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, in a ceremony taking place in Berlin, Germany. With this award, the Fulbright Association honors Chancellor Merkel for her leadership and her strong commitment to mutual understanding, international cooperation, and peace. Fulbright Association members, German alumni, academics, think tanks, nonprofit leaders, politicians, diplomats, current Fulbright grantees in Germany, and friends of international education gathered to honor Chancellor Merkel.
The Fulbright Prize honors the largest and most significant educational and cultural exchange program in history, as well as the career and spirit of its creator, the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. The prize recognizes and rewards outstanding contributions toward bringing peoples, cultures, or nations to greater understanding of others. The inaugural Fulbright Prize was awarded to former South African President Nelson Mandela in 1993.

A New Media Crisis

On January 25 a book launch for Dr. Monica Cure's new book, Picturing the Postcard: A New Media Crisis at the Turn of the Century (University of Minnesota Press), took place at Orest Tafrali bookstore at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University where she was finishing up a Fulbright grant.

The book launch was hosted by Dr. Dana Badulescu (Associate Professor of English and Vice-dean, Faculty of Letters, UAIC). It featured a lively panel discussion with Dr. Rodica Mocan (Associate Professor of Cinematography and Media and Vice-dean, Faculty of Theater and Film, Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca) and Dr. Liviu Ciortuz (Associate Professor of Computer Science, UAIC)
