News from Romanian Fulbrighter Iulian Toader

“In April I had the opportunity to attend the Annual Graduate Student Conference of the Cold War, organized by LSE, GWU and UCSB. This year, the conference was organized by the George Washington University in Washington D.C. I remember that three years ago, when I began my doctorate on Cold War history, I was thinking how great it would be to attend such a conference and to disseminate my research findings. With the help of the Fulbright program, the possibility became reality. My paper Romania’s Westpolitik and European security: A reconsideration (1969-1975) was well received and I was encouraged to publish it in a peer-reviewed journal. I also had the opportunity to meet colleagues studying the Cold War from all across the world and to create a global network of young Cold War historians. Suffice it to say that I have also received great feedback on my ideas from some of the most well-known professors on Cold War history.
As my stay in the U.S. comes to an end, I am starting to look back at how great this year has been thanks to the Fulbright program. Besides my academic activities, I had the chance to make new lifetime friends from more than half of the countries of the world and to experience the best ‘flavors’ of the American culture.”

EAAS Conference in Constanta

The 2016 European Association for American Studies Conference, including among its participants 400 academics from over 40 countries, took place at Ovidius University, Constanta, between April 22nd and 25th. The opening address from the part of the U.S. Embassy was given by Mr. Dean Thompson, Deputy Chief of Mission, who spoke about the growth of American Studies in Romania and the Romanian-American partnership in the field of culture and education.

The Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission, a major factor in the development of American Studies in Romania, was as always involved and present on this occasion. Representing the host country, Prof. dr. Rodica Mihaila, Executive Director of the Commission, delivered the first keynote lecture entitled “‘Things like this aren’t supposed to happen in America.’ Sites of Worlding in the Post-9/11 Novel”. The Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission was also represented by current American grantees - Tunde Adeleke, Iowa State University, Rebecca Bosshart, University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Lindsey Appell, University of Utah – as well as by an impressive number of Romanian alumni of the program.

Honorary Professor of Finance

Professor Seyed Mehdian was granted the Honorary Professor of Finance (Profesor de Onoare) by the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, in recognition of his „outstanding merits in the field of Finances, for his substantial and sustained efforts, actions and contributions to scientific knowledge, as well as for the role played by him in the development of good relationships with the academic sphere in Iasi.”

Dr. Seyed Mehdian, from the University of Michigan, Flint, was a Fulbright Senior Grantee affiliated with the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest back in 2006-2007. Since then, he returned almost every year to Romania, expanded his activities to more Romanian universities and extensively collaborated with his Romanian colleagues. We would like to mention here only that Professor Mehdian intermediated the Student Exchange agreement between the University of Michigan and Al.I. Cuza University and he was on the editorial board of the Scientific Annals of Economics and Business, published by the same university.
