FEAC-EducationUSA Connects with Students in Brasov

On March 23, the FEAC-EducationUSA team was happy to speak to around 60  highly ambitious students at “Andrei Saguna” National College in Brasov, encouraging them to consider the option of studying in the United States and the advantages of an international education on a U.S. campus. Later in the day, Transylvania University of Brasov hosted our presentation about the Fulbright Junior Award and independent graduate study opportunities, during which we were delighted to have the support and enthusiastic participation of Tara Skurtu, outstanding young American poet and translator of Romanian poetry, who is currently affiliated with Transylvania University as a Fulbright Teaching English Assistant. The next day, on March 24, we were glad to take part in the first RIUF edition in Braşov and interact with the countless visitors who stopped by our booth to inquire about study opportunities in the US, the application process and chances of getting financial aid. Several of the visitors also voiced an interest in graduate programs in the US and were happy to learn about the Fulbright grants. Those who joined us for the special seminar had a chance to get more in-depth information on the path to studying or conducting research in the US, independently or via a Fulbright award, and the ways in which FEAC-EducationUSA can help them build a strong independent application.

Fulbright Visiting Scholar at MIT Meets Noam Chomsky

Alexandru Nicolae, current  Fulbright Scholar in the field of Linguistics/Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his wife Dr. Adina Dragomirescu have let us know about their recent meeting with professor Noam Chomsky, the father of modern linguistics: “Meeting Prof. Chomsky was one of the greatest accomplishments of our life. Professor Chomsky is extremely active and curious about the work of younger researchers like us: we had the great chance to discuss linguistics with Chomsky and to have the opportunity to get feedback from him. We also seized the opportunity and invited him to Bucharest, where a large group of his followers and admirers are anxious to meet him and listen to him. What is impressive is that the entire MIT linguistics and philosophy community is extremely open and eager to engage in scientific debate. A great place to be, indeed!”

Fulbright-EducationUSA Team Delivers Presentations in Cluj-Napoca

On March 21st, one day before the beginning of the second leg of the spring edition of RIUF (Romanian International University Fair), the Fulbright-EducationUSA/FEAC team reached out to a variety of audiences in Cluj-Napoca, one of the most prestigious academic centers in the country. The day started with a presentation about the Fulbright Junior Award and independent applications to graduate programs in the U.S., kindly hosted and efficiently co-organized by the Center for International Development within Babes-Bolyai University. The presentation benefited from the presence and active involvement of Colleen Bertsch, current Fulbright grantee in Romania, who shared invaluable insights from her Fulbright experience in Romania. The next presentation was aimed at high school students keen on studying in the U.S. and took place at the American Corner in Cluj, which has so generously hosted FEAC’s presentations for many years. Students from four secondary schools in Cluj received advice on how to best manage the application process, how to make use of the newest test preparation materials which await them at the local American Corner and how to keep in touch with the FEAC team via online advising. Last, but not least, the Fulbright-EducationUSA team spoke to the students of Transylvania College, a private school in Cluj-Napoca whose class of 2016 includes at least one graduate who will become a freshman of an American university in the fall of this year.
