Students from Liberty University Visit Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission

On Wednesday, June 7, a group of ten U.S. students from Liberty University- Lynchburg, Virginia, coordinated by Fulbright Scholar Alumnus Professor Michael Jones and his wife Laura Jones, paid us a visit in order to learn about study and research opportunities in Romania and the types of educational exchanges which the Fulbright Program facilitates.

The students, currently in Romania as part of the international internship program their university offers, will major in different fields, ranging from Film Studies, Philosophy/Religious Studies and Business to Nursing and English Teaching as a Foreign Language.  During the meeting held at the Fulbright Educational Advising Center, the students asked questions about study opportunities in Romanian universities and were interested in finding  out more about the eligibility requirements for a Fulbright award. They also shared impressions about their recent experience of Romania and the cultural diversity and differences they encountered. Professor Jones remembered his first interaction with the Romanian people and culture, also pointing out a few circumstances he considered significant for his experience as a Fulbrighter in Romania.

The event has proved once more that not only does the Fulbright Program generate life-changing academic and personal experiences but it also builds long-term connections, being an excellent way for every international student and scholar to make the most of the benefits of cultural and academic exchanges.

Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission & EducationUSA at ISD 2017 in Brăila

On June 6, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission and the Fulbright Educational Advising Center (FEAC)-EducationUSA concluded this year’s spring edition of the International Study Day (ISD) tour, alongside the British Council, Campus France and DAAD, with two presentations in Brăila, at “Nicolae Bălcescu” National College and “Gheorghe Munteanu Murgoci” National College.
A total 150 students from both schools – ranging from 9th to 11th graders - attended the two presentations. The FEAC-EducationUSA adviser provided them with an overview of the American higher education system, the application process and forms of financial aid, also highlighting graduate study opportunities, via the Fulbright Student Award or independently. We also encouraged them to keep in touch with the FEAC-EducationUSA advising team, and plan carefully every step of the application process.
The International Study Day project consists of a series of outreach presentations jointly organized by the British Council, Campus France DAAD, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission and the Fulbright-EducationUSA center in Bucharest in various cities throughout the country, targeting the underserved student population.

15 things to do before starting and during your Fulbright Fellowship

Orientation Guide by Fulbright Alumna Alina Dolea

Congratulations for being a Fulbrighter!
For me, the Fulbright Scholar Award is the Oscar of academia: (1) it gives you direct access to top schools, top scholars, state of the art knowledge and latest advancements in your field; (2) it offers the framework to develop your own work collaborating closely with these top scholars, while allowing freedom and space for independent thinking; (3) it is a direct experience of a foreign culture that helps you gain valuable insights into the American way of life. For a researcher this blend is truly one of a kind.

To take full benefit of this awesome experience, here is a 15-things guide I think might help you prepare your departure and the first weeks there. All these are from my direct experience:

1. Read carefully the CIES dedicated webpage. It has all details on logistics, preparations, documents, travel, insurances, etc;

2. Visit the host university webpage in advance to see what it has to offer in general. It is a must to get to know the Department/ School you go to. Pay particular attention to their curricula and how they structure study programs, the axes/centers of research they are conducting, what events and conferences they organize;

A number of NAFSA presentations were also dedicated to the initiation and improvement of study abroad programs. The director of the Commission attended several events, panels and workshops for Fulbright executive directors and talked about recent developments and strong points of Fulbright grants to Romania for U.S. students and scholars. The NAFSA participation included a country poster fair, in which the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission had a booth where prospective educational and institutional partners were able to stop by and discuss avenues for future cooperation between U.S. institutions and the Fulbright Commission.
