This Monday, May 29, one half of the FEAC-EducationUSA advising team was present in Suceava for a series of outreach presentations, highlighting teaching and research opportunities in the United States via the Fulbright Awards, as well as independent study opportunities at an undergraduate or graduate level.

In the first half of the day, the FEAC adviser met with high schoolers interested in studying in the U.S., at two top high schools in Suceava, “Petru Rareş” National College and “Ştefan cel Mare” National College. An overall audience of roughly 90 students – mainly 10th and 11th graders - attended the two presentations, which highlighted the distinguishing traits of the U.S. higher education system and provided students with advice on how to best approach the application process, so as to enhance their chances of getting financial aid. Several voiced an interest in the U.S. as a study destination and were happy to learn they can keep in touch with the FEAC-EducationUSA team via online advising.

On May 22-23, the FEAC representative had the pleasure of meeting with students from two high schools in Oradea, with the kind support of Oradea County Library, which also boasts an American shelf section. The first part of the presentation covered undergraduate admissions, while the second part dealt with graduate study opportunities in the U.S. The Fulbright award program and other research and study opportunities were presented to an audience made up of grad school hopefuls both at the American Shelf as well as at the University of Oradea, thanks to the university’s International Relations Office. All presentations greatly benefited from the support of not one, but two Fulbright English Teaching Assistants, Damaris Bangean and Anna Claspy, who were glad to share their insight and inside information with dozens of prospective Romanian applicants.

From May 18-20, seven of the U.S. Fulbright grantees participated at the British and American Studies Conference at the University of the West in Timisoara. Presentation titles included Damaris Bangean, Anna Claspy, and David Jiménez - "Fulbright Voices on Presenting a Fragmented America"; Anna Claspy - "On the History of Sex Education in the U.S."; Ellen Marie Peck - “'Sit Down, John': De-Mystifying America’s Founders on the Musical Stage"; Melanie Shoffner - "The American Teacher: The Importance of Fictional Representations of Teachers"; Richard St. Peter - "Harley Granville Barker and the New Drama"; and Leo Zonn - "Mobility and the Construction of Filmic Places."

 

The Fulbright Program had a strong presence at the BAS conference, which drew participants from almost 20 countries. The current Fulbright grantees even met American Fulbright grantees from previous years who had stayed in touch with contacts made during their own grant periods in Romania. The Fulbright grantees also enjoyed a lively cocktail reception and an outing to a historic village museum hosted by the BAS Conference.

The Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission is pleased to announce the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship competition for young and mid-career professionals with demonstrated leadership potential, public service commitment and the capacity to take full advantage of a self-defined program of independent study at a leading U.S. university. The program offers a year of combined academic (NON-DEGREE) and professional work and awards a certificate from the U.S. Government.

The Humphrey Fellowship provides for: payment of tuition and fees at the assigned host university; pre-academic English language training, if required; a maintenance allowance; a one-time settling-in allowance; accident/ sickness coverage; a book allowance; a one-time computer subsidy; round-trip international airfare and domestic travel (to required workshops/seminars); a Professional Development allowance. The Humphrey Program does not provide financial support for accompanying dependents.
