Yale University Rep Connects with Romanian Students at FEAC

On Friday, October 20, the EdUSA-affiliated Fulbright Educational Advising Center (FEAC) hosted a Yale information session, for the benefit of Romanian students.
Hannah Mendlowitz, Senior Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions, provided the attendees with comprehensive information on academic programs, campus life, admissions, and financial aid.
30 Romanian high school students, mainly 10th and 11th graders from some of the finest schools in Bucharest, as well as other cities, took part in the event, eager to learn more about the admission process, and took ample advantage of the Q & A session to ask questions on topics ranging from extracurricular activities to campus culture and living arrangements.
Since some of the attendees were for the first time at FEAC-EducationUSA, the FEAC adviser took this opportunity to tell them about the resources and services we provide to help them throughout the application process.

Fulbright Participation in the Astra Film Festival in Sibiu

Dr. Rebekah Jorgensen, Fulbright professor of documentary at U.N.A.T.C., attended the Astra Documentary Film Festival in Sibiu, October 16 to 22, 2017, where her Masters students spent the week learning about new approaches, marketing and distribution of documentary projects.

Besides viewing many of the excellent documentaries, both in and out of competition, Rebekah had the opportunity to interview Festival Founder and Director Dumitru Budrala and Artistic Director Csilla Cato about the evolution of documentaries in Romania and festival interest. Razvan Crisu Manea, Director of the "Video Bar", explained the innovative approach to maximizing attendees' ability to view additional films outside of screening. Two highlights were the meeting of the film team, archaeologists and the Romanian head prosecutor at the screening of "The Hunt for Transylvanian Gold" about the Dacian Gold scandals, and a Norwegian animated documentary, "The Man Who Knew 75 Languages", which explored the relationship of linguist Georg Sauerwein with Romanian Queen Elisabeta/Carmen Sylva (including his visit to her at Peles castle), and which was introduced by her great-nephew, Nicolae de Roumanie.

American Thought and Culture

Bill Issel, Professor of History Emeritus, San Francisco State University, already twice a Fulbright scholar in the UK and Hungary, will be present in Timisoara’s West University for the second semester of the current academic year to teach courses on American Thought and Culture. Bill is a distinguished author and editor, among others of several of the volumes in The Contemporary USA series published by [Palgrave] Macmillan in the US and UK.

A Warm Welcome to the 2017-2018 U.S. Fulbright Grantees

The beginning of the academic year in Romania coincides with the arrival of the new group of American Scholars, Researchers, and ETA Student grantees. In their honor, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission organizes every October the Orientation Seminar aimed at introducing them to the new environment and helping them adapt, as well as meeting Romanian academics, colleagues, and alumni of the program.

The current group of American Fulbright grantees consists of twenty-four professors and students who are teaching and performing research in the fields of Science & Engineering, Sociology, American Studies, Public Health, Architecture, Geology, Transmedia and Filmmaking, Marketing, Anthropology, Political Science and English Teaching Assistantships (ETA) at universities and institutions in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Timisoara, Constanta, Brașov, Oradea, Sibiu, Craiova, Arad and Galati.

On October 5, the newly arrived American grantees were welcomed by U.S. and Romanian high officials and received information on different topical subjects, including consular, security, political, economic, health and media briefings, from U.S. Embassy experts and Romanian and U.S. alumni of the program.

In the evening, a welcome reception was organized for our guests at Casa Oamenilor de Stiinta. On Friday, October 6, the group visited Peles Castle in Sinaia.

Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission & FEAC-EducationUSA at RIUF 2017 Fall Edition in Bucharest

In October, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission and the Fulbright Educational Advising Center-EducationUSA took part in the Bucharest 2017 fall edition of the Romanian International University Fair (RIUF), a landmark on the map of educational fairs in Eastern Europe.

The Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission and its EducationUSA-affiliated advising center were once again present at this year’s fall edition of RIUF in Bucharest, providing information on the Fulbright program and the path to studying in the U.S., at an undergraduate or graduate level.

The two-day event proved successful, with over 300 people stopping by our booth to inquire about study opportunities in the U.S., financial aid and the application process. All prospective applicants were also happy to learn more about the wide range of free resources, services and activities that FEAC-EducationUSA provides, in order to assist them in the application process.
