News from U.S. Fulbright Scholar Patrick McDermott

Dr. E. Patrick McDermott visited the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iași from May 14 – 15. He delivered two lectures on the subject of Negotiation and attended a meeting of the Iași Chamber of Commerce. At the Chamber of Commerce he met with some local business owners and discussed their business strategies and issues. He is continuing to help one entrepreneur introduce his energy saving invention in the U.S. Dr. McDermott also met with faculty to discuss mutual research interests and discussed the Fulbright Program with interested faculty.

On May 21-22, Dr. McDermott visited the Babeș-Bolyai University School of Law. He met with a class of undergraduate labor law students and Masters of Law students and lectured on the topic of the U.S. employment law model and the rise of the “gig economy”. The following day he delivered a lecture on the topic of “Labor Law Today and How Negotiation is Taught and Implemented in the U.S.”

Humphrey Fellow Promotes Quality Improvement in Healthcare

Romanian Humphrey Fellow Vlad Mixich, affiliated with Emory University, organized a field visit on quality improvement in healthcare for six key Romanian healthcare executives and opinion leaders. The group visited five hospitals in Atlanta and had meetings with twenty-four medical doctors, nurses, and engineers who work in patient safety and healthcare quality improvement. Reflecting on the study visit, Vlad said: "It was a transformational visit for the Romanian team and I know that back home they will start changing things around them. Sharing knowledge is the most powerful change tool we have."

News from Fulbright Scholar Oana Godeanu-Kenworthy

Part of the U.S. Embassy’s outreach events in March, during Women’s Month, Oana Godeanu-Kenworthy, currently Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of Bucharest, met with students from the I. L. Caragiale High-School in Bucharest (March 6), and, via DVC, spoke to high-schoolers in Bacau and Baia Mare (March 26 and 27) at the American Corner at the National Library in Bucharest. The topic of Dr. Godeanu-Kenworthy's lectures was “Influential Women who Changed American History", followed by an interactive section. The high-schoolers enthusiastically brainstormed what type of events, monuments, and actors would best help local communities to learn about, and celebrate, the women who made an impact on Romanian history, and together came up with creative ways to enhance the overall visibility of women in the Romanian national narrative.

Creating an Inclusive Society

Liz Lightfoot, current U.S. Fulbright scholar at the University of Bucharest, was the plenary speaker at the 3rd edition of the NORD - Interdisciplinary Perspectives Conference at the North University Center in Baia Mare. Her talk was titled: “Creating an Inclusive Society: Lessons from Research for the United States and Romania”.

Fulbright Presence at ”1 Decembrie 1918” University in Alba Iulia

Professor Woden Teachout, from Union Institute and University, Cincinnati, Ohio and ETA Fulbright Lecturer Hannah Young, from Ohio State University, current Fulbright grantees at “Lucian Blaga” University in Sibiu, were recently invited to visit ”1 Decembrie 1918” University in Alba Iulia. Dr. Teachout conferenced on "Student Centered Learning: Practical Strategies for an Engaged Classroom", while Hannah Young made a presentation on "The Fulbright Program: An international educational exchange" to a public made up of Romanian and international faculty and students present in Alba Iulia for the International Week of the University.
