Looking at Film as American Art and Culture

Looking at Film as American Art and Culture

Fulbright ETA Matthew Chernick visited Transilvania University of Brasov to present to fellow ETA Stephen Hilger’s American Studies class on Media and Society. The talk was entitled “Looking at Film as American Art and Culture.” The lecture presented an overview of American film history as well as basic vocabulary and skills for discussing cinema in an academic setting. Focus was emphasized on how American movies reflected the times in which they were created and what the future of American cinema might look like today. Students were engaged in a “close viewing” activity and spent time discussing the reflection of Romanian society in their own nation’s cinematic tradition. This visit was undertaken as a part of the Commission’s initiative to have U.S. Fulbright grantees meet Romanian students and academic staff ouside their host institutions.
