Pre-Admissions

Poza 6.1In order to help you get closer to U.S. education, the Fulbright Educational Advising Center makes available a range of online resources, very useful for everyone interested to learn more about becoming a student in the USA.

How to finance Grad school:

Poza-6.2The following webinars have been devised and held by the Fulbright Educational Advising Center in order to facilitate your access to data and information about U.S. education. Here is the complete list of webinars and a timetable for upcoming events.

Post-Admissions

Student/F1 visa

Poza 6.5You do not need to have a U.S. visa when you apply. The visa only becomes relevant when you need to physically be on a U.S. campus.  International students enrolled on U.S. campuses enter the USA on an F-1 visa. After applying, getting admitted and funded, you will accept one school’s offer and receive the I-20 form from them. You will use this document to apply for your visa, alongside other documents like your acceptance letter and financial aid offer.

Visas ar usually issued for the duration of your academic program. Even if you already have a U.S. visa – say the B-1 visa for tourists – you will need to apply for the student visa. According to our records at the Fulbright Educational Advising Center, legitimate students are always granted the visa.

Full details on the U.S. Embassy in Romania’s website, here.

Pre-Departure Orientation.

Poza 6.6The Fulbright Commission offers students admitted to U.S. universities a full-day Pre-Departure Orientation held usually in mid-July. The orientation program is meant to facilitate the students' cultural and academic adjustment during their study or research program in the United States. The training program includes workshops and sessions featuring U.S. Embassy reps and Romanian and U.S. students and professors who share their U.S. academic experiences.

Everyone accepted to a higher education program in the USA is welcome to attend the Orientation before they leave for their study program in the U.S.. Contact us for details!
Before you leave Romania to start your U.S. program, double-check that you have all the documents you will need for your travel and stay in the United States:
•        Passport and non-immigrant visa: hand-carry your passport and certificate of eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019) with you at all times during your travel. On the plane, before you land, you will complete the Arrival-Departure Record (I-94 form). At the point of entry the U.S. Customs and Border Protection will take your biometric fingerprints and photograph. Part of the I-94 will be stapled into your passport. Do not lose it! The stapled portion will be removed when you leave the United States;
•        Confirm that you have the I-20 or DS-2019 issued by the school or program you will be attending;
•        Contact information: have the name and phone number of your international student adviser on campus, in case you need to call him/her upon arrival in the United States;
•        Birth certificate and marriage certificate, if applicable. Be sure to obtain notarized translations of these certificates if they are not in English;
•        Medical documents: bring certificates of immunizations and vaccinations, prescriptions and medical and dental records. Many U.S. schools have specific immunization requirements you must meet before you can enroll in class. Make sure you meet them before you leave for the USA;
•        Academic transcripts: bring your official transcripts, outlines, or description of courses you have taken, and contact information of the office for international students on your U.S. campus;
•        College or university acceptance letter;
•        Financial aid letter/proof of availability of funds for U.S. study.

The visa application process and traveling to the USA are comprehensively covered during the Pre-Departure Orientation you can attend at the Fulbright Commission.

"I like the exercises in the tests, although the answers don't provide enough explanations."
Floriana Foarta, "I.L. Caragiale" Natl College, Bucharest, 11th grade
"The book serves as a good evaluator of one's likely performances on the actual test."
Ioana Paun, ASE Bucharest
"The book helped me understand the level of difficulty of a real SAT test, as it is published by the College Board." Madalina Bozeanu, "Sf. Sava" Natl College, Bucharest, 12th grade
"I like the way theory is explained and information is structured, as well as the use of examples. I also like the fact that it has 8 practice tests, which is quite a lot! The only flaw is that the book doesn't have detailed answers for the practice tests. Plus the scores at the end of each test are somewhat misleading."
Valentin Buciumas, International Computer High School, Bucharest, 12th grade

"Smart strategies, very good preparation for the test sections, especially writing. However, I find the practice tests less difficult than those in the Arco and College Board prep books."

         LSAT

Poza 5.39The Fulbright Center currently stocks the following titles (with annotations by Irina Antonache, law graduate at Willamette University, OR):

LSAT: The Official Triple Prep Plus with Explanations, published by Law School Admission Council (LSAC)
The volume shows you how to approach the three LSAT question types using official explanations for right or wrong answers. The book includes some of the writing samples that have appeared on actual tests. It also gives complete instructions for the simulated test conditions, official LSAT instructions and answer sheets, as well as information on how to convert your score into the 120-180 scale.
It doesn't provide the best explanations on how to tackle the questions. Neither are the explanations in depth. However, it offers good test practice once you've learnt your strategies somewhere else.

Cracking the LSAT, published by The Princeton Review
The book gives you advice on how to eliminate answer choices that look right but are planted to fool you, crack complex arguments by zeroing in on the conclusion, use powerful methods of diagramming to solve game problems, ace the reading comprehension section by "mapping out" the passage, and earn a higher score on the writing sample by knowing what they're really looking for.
I find it very useful as it gives techniques for answering questions more in-depth. It's really good for the practice tests and it has lots of writing in it.

Master the LSAT, published by Nove Press
The volume contains detailed solutions to numerous actual LSAT questions, carefully selected to illustrate every type of question that has appeared on the test in the past several years, including the thorough analysis of a complete LSAT. These solutions will introduce you to numerous analytic techniques that will help you significantly not only on the LSAT but in law school as well.
I found very good explanations of how to approach questions or games in it. It's excellent for beginners as it has lots of practice.

LSAT, published by Barron's, 8th Edition
The book includes a diagnostic to determine your strengths and weaknesses, 6 practice exams with analysis and explanations, chapters for each section of the test with practice questions, explanations and analysis, and information on how to choose a law school.
Useful given the good clear strategies to practice and the test practice it provides.

LSAT, published by REA
Contains exercise drills for all test sections, an LSAT study course schedule, complete coaching and review, plus 6 exams. By studying the review, test tips, and strategies and completing all six tests you can discover your strengths and weaknesses and ultimately become well prepared for the actual test.
I find it more challenging, therefore I'd recommend it for a later stage of the preparation process. It's no doubt excellent for test practice purposes.

How Do I Register for the Test?

Registration method varies according to payment method: credit card (most convenient) or bank check. Note: the card does not need to be in your name, so you can use the cards of family or friends.

In case you do not show up on your assigned day and hour for taking the test, the registration fee will not be refunded.

Standby testing:
If you missed the registration deadline, you can still try to test as a standby.
Standby testing may be available if sufficient space, test materials, and staff are available at the test center.
The standby testing fee of $50 is on top of the test fee. Further information on standby testing is available on the GRE website.
