Sewanee: The University of the South, TN

"Sewanee is like a little bit of Britain's Oxford plunked down in the highlands of Tennessee," according to the Fiske Guide to Colleges, available in FEAC's study room.

This highly competitive institution (64% of applicants admitted) is a private 4-year coed university located in the school-owned village of Sewanee, where tradition, technology and passionate students and faculty mingle, creating a strong community that goes beyond the 13,000 acre-campus and into adult life.

Sewanee offers 36 majors, 27 minors, and 15 special programs, along with pre-medicine, pre-nursing, pre-law, and pre-business. More than 40 percent of students participate in study-abroad programs. A comprehensive endowed program that provides financial support for summer internships has greatly strengthened career development for undergraduates.

Scholarships are available for degree-seeking international students, ranging from $20,000 a year (half the cost of tuition, fees, room, and board) to over $40,000 per year (full ride). To be considered for an International Scholarship, applicants must submit an additional 600-1000 word essay on one of the topics mentioned on www.sewanee.edu. Sewanee: The University of the South is a small liberal arts college located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Here you will find engaged professors and dedicated students who aren't afraid to work hard yet still enjoy social activities and having fun. There are ample opportunities for extracurricular activities, from soccer to theater to even just a friendly game of frisbee on the quad during a sunny spring afternoon. Situated on top of Monteagle Mountain in southeast Tennessee, the views of the surrounding rural area below are some of the prettiest in the region, if not the country. The campus itself is beautiful: every building has stunning sandstone facades and the abundance of greenery and picturesque trails create a distinctive environment to work and play in. Though located in a rural area, Sewanee is close to two major southern cities, Nashville and Chattanooga, and only a 3 hour drive to Atlanta, though most students find themselves so engaged in college life they rarely leave campus!

Financial aid is abundant for international students. Out of the 22 international students enrolled, every one receives a form of financial aid, averaging nearly full tuition. The University aims for a diverse student population, so this is an advantage for all those interested. In addition, this four year liberal arts college has some very unique, yet fun, traditions. For example, it is not uncommon to see those in the academic honor society wearing capes (actually they are "gowns" and the society, named the Order of the Gown, is very prestigious).
