Summer Institues for European Leaders

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
The Summer Institutes for European Student Leaders is a five-week academic program for young people ages 18-22. This program is offered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State. The Institutes are an all-expense paid program, including meals, transportation, books, tickets to cultural events, accident and sickness insurance and a stipend of $20/day to cover incidentals.

ELIGIBLE FIELD: Environmental Stewardship

Participants in the Summer Institute on Environmental Stewardship will explore current themes in environmental studies, which may include natural resource management, sustainable development/ sustainable agricultural practices, food security, ecotourism, energy generation (new and traditional forms), and water management and treatment. The issues will be explored from numerous angles: local grassroots activism and civic initiatives, market-oriented approaches, and federal government policies and regulation. The Institute might also examine the relationship between environmental security and national security. In addition, the Institute will explore environmental issues in the context of a globalized society, and will draw comparisons between the United States and the participants' home countries. We expect the Institute on Environmental Stewardship to provide opportunities for participants to engage with policy makers, individuals in technical positions, community representatives, indigenous leaders, and other key actors committed to the protection and management of the environment.

GRANT DURATION: 5 weeks, beginning early July.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:
• have Romanian citizenship and study in Romania;
• have at least one year of university study remaining;
• be at least 18 years old and no older than 22 years old by the start of the summer institute program in the U.S.;
• be able to participate in the program in its entirety;
• have an adequate working knowledge of English;
• be committed to returning to their home to enroll in post-secondary study or continue study at a post-secondary institution in the fall of the same year;
• have had no or extremely limited study or travel experience in the United States;
• be mature, responsible, independent, and open-minded;
• honor all campus housing agreements and regulations related to living arrangements;
• be willing and able to participate fully in the Institute academic program, including attending all sessions, arriving to class on time, completing all assignments, and contributing to classroom discussions;
• be willing and able to participate fully in all cultural programs and volunteer activities;
• be prepared to submit a report to the Fulbright Commission on their program experience.

Each applicant will be required to submit:
• an application form
• academic transcripts for undergraduate level, accompanied by English translations
The application includes the reference form to be completed by two evaluators.
