Annual Meeting of the Executive Directors of European Fulbright Commissions

Organized by the EDs Executive Committee and hosted by the Portuguese Fulbright Commission, the annual meeting of the Executive Directors of European Fulbright Commissions took place in Lisbon from April 15 to April 17.  A special guest was Richard Mei, Branch Chief, European and Eurasian Programs of Academic Exchanges, U.S. Department of State. The next meeting will be held in Rome, in April 2016.

Fulbright Commission’s Executive Director Receives “Women of Courage Award” Nomination

Dr. Rodica Mihăilă, Executive Director of the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission, was honored with a special “Women of Courage Award” nomination, granted by the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, in recognition of her pioneering role in Romanian education. An initiative of the U.S. Department of State, the International “Women of Courage” Award is offered annually to women around the world whose leadership and dedication have contributed to the advancement of society, with a particular emphasis on women’s rights. Dr. Rodica Mihăilă was honored as a tireless advocate for quality in education  and as the founder of American Studies in Romania, which she promoted through the program she created at the University of Bucharest, as well as through her work as the initiator and first president of the Romanian Association of American Studies. During the ceremony which took place on Thursday, April 16, 2015, dr. Mihăilă’s role as Executive Director of the Fulbright Commission was also highlighted as playing a significant role in the future of the Romanian – U.S. bilateral relationship.

Fulbright Scholar Addresses the “Center for Research in Applied Ethics”

Current Fulbright scholar Michael S. Jones presented his research on peer disagreement to the Center for Research in Applied Ethics (www.CCEA.ro), which is part of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest. The subject of the rationality of disagreement between experts in any given field of study has become the focus of considerable attention in analytic epistemology over the last ten years. The discussion is now broadening beyond the theoretical aspects and is beginning to be applied to a variety of specific domains of research. Dr. Jones’ presentation focused on the application of the epistemological discussion to ethics. His presentation was followed by a prepared response by Dr. Mircea Flonta, a well-known Bucharest philosopher, and by a time of Q&A.

Graduate Admissions: Workshop on Essay Writing on April 21

On Tuesday, April 21, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission & FEAC-EducationUSA will host the workshop: "Building Your Way to U.S. Graduate Admissions: Writing Persuasive Essays''.

You will have the opportunity to discuss the components of strong essays, analyze excerpts from successful Fulbright applications, and consider which skills/qualifications to emphasize. The workshop will also touch upon matters of tone, language and style helpful for effective essay writing.

The presentation will be led by Jamie Weaver, Fulbright ETA 2014-2015, and graduate of Columbia College - Chicago, IL.

News from U.S. Fulbright Scholar Linda Kidwell

Linda Kidwell, Senior Fulbright Scholar for the spring of 2015, delivered a series of four lectures in February and March at Academia de Studii Economice din București (ASE), also known as the Bucharest University of Economic Studies.  She spoke to accounting students in four programs at ASE about the importance of business ethics in general, as well as following ethics expectations of the accounting profession specifically.  She addressed in depth the Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants issued by the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA), a code which has been adopted not only by the various professional accountancy bodies in Romania but in over 100 countries globally, and she also contrasted the international approach to the American approach.
