Fulbright Author Launches Romanian Translation in Cluj

Every year around the 9th of May the annual Lucian Blaga Festival takes place in Cluj-Napoca. May 9th is significant both as the birthday (in 1895) of this great Romanian philosopher-poet, and also as the day of his interment (in 1961). The festival draws authors, poets, philosophers, and admirers of Romanian culture from all the regions of Romania and the Republic of Moldova. It frequently attracts foreign scholars as well. This year an American philosopher participated in the Festival: Dr. Michael S. Jones, associate professor of philosophy at Liberty University and visiting professor and Fulbright scholar at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest. Dr. Jones presented the recently-published Romanian translation of his book The Metaphysics of Religion: Lucian Blaga and Contemporary Philosophy, and related the story of how he first heard of Blaga in 1998 during a brief trip to Romania, returned in 2000 under the sponsorship of the Fulbright program to research Blaga’s philosophy, published his research in American in 2006, and eventually was able to see it translated and published in Romania (2014). The translation was made by Geo Savulescu, a Bucharest intellectual. Copies of the book brought to the festival quickly sold out.
