Under the Surface of American and British Cultural Contrasts

Flora Kirk, a research Fulbright grantee at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj, was invited to give a talk on American culture at the West University of Timisoara. She presented for the “Intellectual History of Culture and Diversity in the USA” course co-taught by Fulbright ETA Natalie Davis, discussing her experience acclimating to American culture, and the underlying elements that shape American identity, expression, and demeanour. She began by discussing what it was like to change from a British to an American school, and what she found immediately different about American life. Initially it was the accents, certain vocabulary, and even different approaches to solving math problems.

However, as time passed, she began to notice more inherent differences: an optimistic outlook in life, general gregariousness, and the courage to be direct in conversation and honest about feelings. During discussion the class noted that Romanian and American attitudes have a lot in common, especially the confidence to be straightforward without skirting around an issue.
