The Essay Writing Workshop for Graduate School Applicants
The Road to Graduate Admissions: Essay Writing Strategies and Practical Guidance

On Thursday, April 6, David Emanuel JIMENEZ, Fulbright ETA affiliated with Ovidius University in Constanta (U.S. home university Bowdoin College, ME), and Octavian MANEA, Romanian Fulbright Alumnus with a Master’s in International Relations from Syracuse University, moderated the workshop titled “The Road to Graduate Admissions: Essay Writing Strategies and Practical Guidance”. During the workshop, which lasted over an hour, David and Octavian helped the 16 participants – mainly forthcoming Fulbright applicants – grasp the differences between a strong and a weak personal statement. In a practical and dynamic manner, ingeniously implemented by the two moderators, the prospective applicants were acquainted with ways to make their case by looking at essays belonging to former successful applicants. The participants also received suggestions on how to better define their study and research objectives, and demonstrate their professional and social qualities, strong personality and special abilities which would make a Romanian applicant a good fit for the Fulbright Program, as well as an attractive international student to a US university.
