FEAC Summer Camp for Students with Visual Disabilities Met with Enthusiasm

Last week, July 13 to 17, the Fulbright Educational Advising Center-EducationUSA hosted its first ever Summer Camp for Students with Visual Disabilities.
The purpose of this week-long summer camp was to reach out to underserved segments of the Romanian student population, visually impaired students in particular, encouraging them to take advantage of our resources, including our Accessibility Corner, and get better acquainted with U.S. culture.
Participants in the event – coming mainly from the Bucharest School for Visually Impaired Students – had a chance to take part in a wide range of activities, designed to help them improve their level of English, expand their vocabulary and get up, close and personal with U.S. culture. They learned more about U.S. states and their symbols, explored U.S. music and history through song and got acquainted with Native American culture through interactive activities, such as creating their own medicine wheel.
Ms. Marjorie Stern, U.S. Cultural Attaché and long-term supporter of the Accessibility Corner project, paid us a visit on the second day of the camp and congratulated participants on their level of English.
We wish to thank Ms. Rodica Colgiu, our guests’ dedicated teacher, for her invaluable assistance in making this event possible. Special thanks go to FEAC-EducationUSA interns and volunteers, for their creative input and day-to-day support during the five days of the camp.
Given the participants’ enthusiastic response, we hope this will be the first in a series of events designed to enhance our accessibility and bring U.S. culture and FEAC-EducationUSA resources closer to visually impaired students.
