“Alternative Education Week” @ FEAC-EducationUSA Center

After kicking off its first “Alternative Education Week” program in style, with two events at the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, the Fulbright Educational Advising Center-EducationUSA hosted three other successful events held under the “Alternative Education Week” umbrella.

On Tuesday, April 7, we hosted an online interactive presentation delivered by Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Logan Woods. High school students from Bacău and Sibiu joined us via NewRow for this engaging webinar titled “Cultural Regions of the U.S.”. Mr. Woods, a graduate of Albion College, gave us an overview of the cultural map of the U.S., using his personal narrative to highlight cultural and linguistic differences and the stigma attached to certain regional accents.

On Wednesday, April 8, we played host to a group of students from “Eugen Lovinescu” High School in Bucharest, keen to learn more about the path to applying in the U.S. The FEAC-EducationUSA team was happy to acquaint them with the American education system and guide them through the “Five Steps to U.S. Admissions”. We took the opportunity to give them a tour of the FEAC-EducationUSA library, encouraging them to avail themselves of our free advising services and generous resources. They were joined by high schoolers from Ploieşti, who took advantage of Alternative Education Week to visit the center and start preparing for the SAT.

Last, but definitely not least, on Thursday, April 9, Jamie Weaver, Fulbright ETA and interdisciplinary artist, kindly agreed to work her arts & crafts magic once again, offering a group of primary school students an introduction to the fascinating art of bookbinding.

Alternative Education Week is a program taking place every year the week before Easter, during which high school students in Romania are encouraged to take part in a wide range of cultural events instead of attending their usual classes, so as to get a sense of opportunities for learning and education outside the classroom.
