Fulbright Alumna Anamaria Vrabie participated in German Marshall Fund’s first event focusing exclusively on urban policy and leadership issues – the Bilbao Urban Innovation and Leadership Dialogues (BUILD)

The Bilbao Urban Innovation and Leadership Dialogues (BUILD) was the German Marshall Fund’s first event focusing exclusively on urban policy and leadership issues. Anamaria Vrabie, Fulbright Alumna at The New School New York, was one of the 100 civic leaders and urban practitioners from GMF’s network in the U.S. and Europe who met in Bilbao between June 11-14, 2014, to discuss strategies for leading transformative change in cities.

During the BUILD, Anamaria contextualized the experience of the Eastern European countries of re-building a sense of community post 1990 and coping with the changing urban fortunes for many mono-industrial cities. Cultivating trust and a shared responsibility for the mediums we live in is an arduous process, sometimes strongly disconnected from the current programs revolving around the EU’s cohesion policy, which do inform most of the investments and revitalization efforts for cities and regions in this area.

The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) strengthens transatlantic cooperation on regional, national, and global challenges and opportunities in the spirit of the Marshall Plan.
